Plan a home LiFePO4 battery system from cells to inverter communication

A home battery project must connect the cell dimensions, enclosure, BMS, current path, active balancing, inverter protocol, protection hardware, installation environment, and delivery scope. Selecting only by nominal kWh can leave critical compatibility questions unanswered.

Start with the intended operating role

Define whether the battery is intended for photovoltaic self-consumption, time-of-use shifting, backup support, off-grid operation, generator reduction, or a combination of these functions. The operating role determines the required usable energy, charge and discharge power, reserve level, cycle frequency, and inverter behavior.

Record the expected daily load profile and the highest simultaneous load instead of selecting capacity from a single appliance rating.

Confirm the cell format before choosing an enclosure

A nominal cell capacity such as 280Ah or 320Ah does not guarantee identical physical dimensions. Confirm cell width, depth, height, terminal position, thread type, compression allowance, insulation clearance, and cable routing before selecting a battery box.

Enclosure kits are not complete batteries

JKBMS enclosure-kit pages describe the supplied metal enclosure and the selected hardware package. Battery cells, inverter, external protection equipment, installation, and commissioning are not included unless the written quotation explicitly lists them.

Compare the available formats on the LiFePO4 Battery Kits page and use the battery enclosure selection guide before ordering.

Choose floor-standing or rack installation

Planning factorCaster enclosure6U rack enclosure
InstallationFloor-standing arrangement with wheels for positioning and service access.Designed around a standard 19-inch rack installation.
Space planningRequires floor area, wheel clearance, cable routing, ventilation, and protection from movement.Requires rack load verification, rail or shelf support, airflow, and front or rear cable access.
ExpansionAdditional enclosures can be positioned as separate battery units when the electrical design supports parallel operation.Multiple modules can be organized in a rack, subject to rack loading, busbar, fuse, communication, and inverter limits.

Size the BMS from current and battery architecture

Confirm chemistry, series count, nominal voltage, maximum charge voltage, continuous charge current, continuous discharge current, short-duration peak current, and the inverter or charger limits. The BMS current rating must be coordinated with the cells, busbars, cables, fuses, breaker, contactor or MOSFET design, and thermal environment.

Use the JKBMS selection guide and then compare the relevant JKBMS product series.

Choose active balancing for the real cell condition

Balance-current requirements depend on battery capacity, cell matching, initial state-of-charge differences, operating window, cycle profile, and the time available for correction. A larger balance-current number does not replace cell grading, correct assembly, torque control, temperature management, or safe charge settings.

Review the 1A vs 2A active balancing guide before choosing between JKBMS balancing classes.

Confirm inverter communication at protocol level

CAN and RS485 describe physical communication interfaces, but compatibility also depends on protocol, pinout, bitrate or baud rate, termination, addressing, firmware, cable wiring, and which device acts as the communication master.

Start with the inverter and BMS communication solution, then compare the available inverter communication cables.

Plan protection, installation, and commissioning

  • Battery fuse or DC breaker sized for the complete current path
  • Correct cable cross-section, lug crimping, insulation, and strain relief
  • Terminal covers and protection against accidental short circuit
  • Cell compression and mechanical restraint suitable for the selected cells
  • Ventilation and temperature control for the installation environment
  • Grounding or bonding according to the enclosure and system design
  • Inverter charge-voltage, discharge-voltage, and current-limit configuration
  • BMS parameter verification before connecting the full load
  • Qualified testing, commissioning, and emergency isolation procedure

Information to prepare before requesting a quotation

  • Cell brand, model, capacity, dimensions, and quantity
  • Battery chemistry and series count
  • Target nominal voltage and usable capacity
  • Continuous and peak charge or discharge current
  • Inverter brand, model, power, and communication requirement
  • Floor-standing or 19-inch rack installation
  • Enclosure-only or enclosure plus BMS and LCD package
  • Installation country and destination
  • Required quantity and project schedule

Compare the hardware after defining the complete system

Use the battery-kit and JKBMS catalogs for product selection, or send the cell, inverter, current, communication, and destination information for review.

Frequently asked questions

HOME STORAGE FAQ

What size battery do I need for a home system?

It depends on daily load, peak power, reserve level, and required backup duration. Size the system from measured kWh consumption and simultaneous load rather than a single appliance rating.

HOME STORAGE FAQ

Can I mix different LiFePO4 cell capacities?

Mixing capacities or significantly different cell conditions is not recommended. Cells should be closely matched in capacity, internal resistance, chemistry, and state of charge.

HOME STORAGE FAQ

Does CAN or RS485 guarantee inverter compatibility?

No. Compatibility also requires matching protocol, connector pinout, bitrate or baud rate, firmware, termination, and communication roles.
